Calmer Choice, a non-profit agency based on Cape Cod that teaches innovative mindfulness prevention programs in Cape Cod schools, received $50,000 as part of the Commonwealth’s FY2019 $41.7 million budget, which was passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor Charlie Baker.
State Senator Julian Cyr (D-Truro) sponsored the budget amendment providing the funding for Calmer Choice. He will announce the funding publicly at Calmer Choice’s Annual Celebration on October 23rd at the Hyannisport Club.
“When it comes to fighting the opioid epidemic and other types of substance abuse, Calmer Choice offers lifelong prevention strategies for students that we hope will give them the emotional tools they need to avoid falling victim to substance abuse.” Senator Julian Cyr
"Research from universities such as Tufts, Harvard and MIT support the effectiveness of the Calmer Choice approach that focuses on creating positive change in students’ lives; skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives,” Cyr added.
“This state funding, the first in our history, recognizes the value of Calmer Choice as a critical program for teaching young people to effectively and safely manage stress, resolve conflict and gain skills that will diminish the risk of violence, substance abuse, and other self-destructive behaviors,” said Fiona Jensen, Founder and Executive Director of Calmer Choice.
“We are grateful to Senator Cyr for securing this funding and to the entire Cape Cod Delegation for their ongoing support of Calmer Choice as our agency embarks on its ninth year of service to the Cape Cod community.” Fiona Jensen
